The Transparency Awards Ceremony, aims to support the works of individuals and institutionsabout the fight against corruption, and encourage the attempts and the acts to extend transparency, integrity and accountability, was held on the 9th of December 2015.
Chair of Transparency International Turkey E.Oya Özarslan said:
“United Nations Convention against Corruption came into operation on December 2005, and ratified by 178 counties including Turkey. On 9th of December every year, organizations about the fight against corruption is held in various locations in the world. Even though, transparency and integrity are discounted terms in Turkey, we’ve decided to award the works and efforts of individuals and institutions working in this field. The fight against corruption is a field which requires courage, we wanted to mediate to reward the courage, and give hope to the individuals and institutions who are tackling against corruption. We hope that this would help Turkey to be an open society, and to improve the rule of law principle. As TI Turkey, we will continue to encourage the works tackling corruption every year with Transparency awards.”
The awards will be given in different 3 categories as Media, Corporate, and Citizen. Winners are listed below.
MEDIA:
Cumhuriyet newspaper won the Media Corporate award. With their pioneer approach against the media blackout Cumhuriyet have made news about; Charlie Hebdo, national intelligence organization, and the trailer trucks occasions and so on, which are important for the public’s right to information.
Hüseyin Şimşek, from Birgün newspaper, won the Media Individual award. He has followed chamber of accounts’ reports neatly, he has brought his researches on corruption cases to the public attention.
Mehmet Atakan Foça won the Exclusive Media award based upon his analysis against the info pollution, and his creative and systematic track work related to social media.
CORPORATE:
Due to their investor relations’ website, and their transparent notifications on their IPad application Garanti Bank won the Corporate Transparency award.
Avon Cosmetics won the Exclusive Corporate award based on their promotiveand remarkable e-mail application called “Colourful and Compatible”.
CITIZEN:
Doğruluk Payı Civil Initiative won the Citizen awardbased upon their systematically catch-up work to inform the public against the info pollution and the political manipulations.
Prime Ministry Inspection Board’s senior inspector Bülent Tarhan won the Exclusive Citizen award, based on his works related to the development of international acquis on anticorruption.
Doğan Satmış took the award on befalh of the Cumhuriyet newspaper, he said:
“I’m taking this award on behalf of Can Dündar, and Erdem Gül who are arrested because of their journalism. It needs courage to give an award to Cumhuriyet newspaper, thanks to Transparency International Turkey because of their courage.”
Hüseyin Şimşek said he’s thankful for Birgün family, detainees and his collegues who are still working and tackling against the difficulties in the field of journalism
