🔍 Comparative Assessment Report: 6 February Earthquake 2024-2025
We once again honor and remember those we lost in the devastating earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on 6 February 2023. This earthquake, which affected 11 cities in Türkiye, not only caused extensive physical destruction but also brought critical issues to light, including institutional capacity, administrative weaknesses, and deficiencies in transparency and accountability.
In the report we published in 2024, we focused primarily on the institutional shortcomings, problems in procurement processes, and weaknesses in public oversight encountered during the post-earthquake period. Serious questions arose regarding the management of aid campaigns and donations for earthquake victims, leading to a significant erosion of public trust. Additionally, damage assessment efforts and service procurements carried out in the affected regions were criticized for the lack of transparency in their methods.
In our new report, we provide an analysis of the steps taken over the past year to address these issues, changes in procurement processes, the progress of legal investigations, and developments in public oversight mechanisms. By evaluating the impact of the measures taken after the earthquake through current data and field research findings, we aim to present an overview of the recovery process’s current stage.
We believe that these evaluations will contribute to establishing stronger disaster management and institutional transparency in the face of future crises.
