Public Opinion Survey Results Announced!

Transparency International Turkey announced the results of public opinion survey titled “Corruption in Turkey: Why? How and Where?” by a press conference in March 9th, 2016, at Taksim Elite World Hotel.

Turkey chapter of Transparency International (TI Turkey), one of the world’s leading organization in fighting with corruption, announced the results of public opinion survey “Corruption in Turkey: Why? How and Where?” which has been conducted with participation of overall 2,000 people in all regions of Turkey.

  • When asked about the level of corruption over the last two years, 67% of the population responded that corruption has not decreased, and 55% believe it has increased.
  • The people with the belief that corruption will increase over the next two years are 41%, adding up to 60% for those who believe it will not decrease.
  • 45% of the respondents who had faced illicit payment or bribery requests in the public sector think reporting to legal authorities will not change to situation, or will make it worse!
  • Respondents identified these as the institutions with the highest instances of bribery over the past 12 months:

Educational institutions,

Planning and zoning,

Municipalities,

And health facilities

  • Asked to rate the corruptness of the institutions, the respondents identify the media, political parties, local governments and municipalities, and the parliament as the most corrupt! 
  • The public also does not trust bureaucratic processes and business-public sector relations, which are susceptible to grand corruption schemes. An 81% majority believes that the private sector has the power to influence public operations and legal regulations through bribery and gifts.
